How long does CAR T-cell therapy take to work for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma?

CAR T cells are prepared to recognise a target on the lymphoma cells. After infusion, they multiply and engage with those cells, but the pace and strength of the response vary. Doctors may use examination, blood tests and imaging to assess lymph nodes and other affected areas.

A temporary fever or other reaction does not by itself show whether the lymphoma has responded. Likewise, tiredness or a smaller swelling cannot replace the planned tests. Your haematology team will interpret the findings together and explain whether treatment is working, needs more observation or requires another plan.

Attend the scheduled visits and bring a list of medicines and symptoms. Measure your temperature as instructed, avoid unapproved medicines or supplements, and follow guidance about driving, visitors and remaining near the treatment centre. Arrange help with daily tasks during the early recovery period.

Call your treatment team urgently for fever, shaking chills, dizziness, confusion, difficulty finding words, severe weakness, seizures or breathing problems. CAR T-cell reactions can become serious, so do not wait for the next routine appointment.

Ask which test will measure your lymphoma response, when it is expected, and what result would change the next step. Clarify the emergency number, travel limits and how long monitoring is needed after leaving the treatment centre.
