How long does CAR T-cell therapy take to work for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia?

The modified cells are infused after preparation treatment and can then recognise and attack targeted leukaemia cells. Early changes do not always show how well treatment will work. Your team may follow blood counts, marrow findings and other tests, because each gives different information about response.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia can respond at different speeds. A scan is not usually the only way to judge progress, and a feeling of improvement may not match the laboratory results. The treatment team will explain when each assessment is planned.

Keep the oncology team’s contact details available and attend every planned review. Record temperature, medicines, fluid intake and new symptoms. Follow instructions about staying near the treatment centre and limiting exposure to infection while your immune system is recovering.

Contact the treatment team urgently for fever, chills, confusion, unusual sleepiness, severe headache, trouble speaking, seizures, breathing difficulty or sudden weakness. These symptoms can signal a serious reaction after CAR T-cell infusion and need prompt assessment.

Ask when your first blood and marrow assessments will occur, which changes would suggest an early response, and whom to call outside clinic hours. Also ask how long you should remain close to the treatment centre and which symptoms require emergency help.
