How long does caesarean section take to work for pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia can affect blood pressure and organs such as the liver, kidneys or brain, and it can affect the placenta and baby. Clinicians may use blood-pressure treatment, seizure prevention medicine, blood tests, urine checks and fetal monitoring while deciding when birth is safest.

A caesarean is not a medicine that cures pre-eclampsia instantly. Delivery removes the pregnancy-related cause, but blood pressure and symptoms can continue or worsen after birth, so observation remains necessary.

Attend monitoring appointments and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Keep a plan for reaching the maternity unit and ask which symptoms require calling immediately. Rest according to your clinician’s advice, but do not use home measures to delay assessment of severe symptoms.

Get urgent maternity assessment for severe headache, visual changes, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, vomiting, confusion, vaginal bleeding or reduced fetal movement. A seizure, collapse or severe breathing difficulty requires emergency services.

Ask what your blood pressure and test results mean, what would prompt delivery, whether vaginal birth remains suitable, and how monitoring will continue after the caesarean.
