How long does caesarean section take to work for placental abruption?

Placental abruption happens when the placenta separates from the uterus before birth. It can reduce oxygen and cause internal or vaginal bleeding. A caesarean may be recommended when rapid delivery is needed and vaginal birth is not imminent or safe. Once the operation begins, the baby is generally delivered early, followed by treatment of bleeding and completion of surgery.

The team may first place intravenous access, check blood tests, monitor the baby and give anaesthesia. These steps happen alongside decision-making when the situation is urgent.

If abruption is suspected, go straight to the maternity emergency service. Do not eat or drink unless clinicians advise it, because anaesthesia may be needed. Bring medication details if this will not delay leaving, and tell staff about pain, bleeding, contractions and fetal movement.

Seek emergency help for vaginal bleeding, sudden or constant abdominal pain, a firm tender uterus, contractions close together, weakness, faintness or reduced fetal movement. A visible amount of bleeding does not show the full extent of an abruption, so symptoms need immediate assessment.
