How long does caesarean section take to work for placenta praevia?

Placenta praevia means the placenta lies low in the uterus and may cover or approach the cervix. A planned caesarean may be arranged before labour if the placenta remains in a position that makes vaginal birth unsafe. The operation itself includes preparation, anaesthesia, delivery and closing the incision; the birth usually occurs early in the procedure, while the rest takes longer.

Unexpected vaginal bleeding, contractions, ruptured waters or changes in the baby’s heart rate can alter the plan. The team may need to act urgently and prepare for bleeding before delivery.

Keep your maternity team’s instructions accessible and attend planned scans and appointments. Ask where to go if bleeding starts, whether you need to avoid travel, and which medicines to take. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment if you have fresh bleeding, contractions or feel unwell.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for any vaginal bleeding, painful tightening, fluid loss, dizziness, faintness or reduced fetal movement. Call emergency services if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, or severe pain develops. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell.
