How long does bursa removal take to work for knee bursitis?

Removing the bursa addresses the swollen sac, but it does not instantly calm every irritated tissue around the kneecap. Bruising, stiffness and fluid near the incision can temporarily make the knee feel full. The result also depends on whether infection, repeated kneeling, skin irritation or another knee problem contributed to the bursitis. Walking may return before kneeling is comfortable. Your clinician may examine the wound and check movement before increasing activity.

Follow dressing and bathing instructions, take only the recommended pain medicines, and use walking support if prescribed. Avoid kneeling, direct pressure and activities that increase throbbing until cleared. Gentle movement can help prevent stiffness when approved. Keep the follow-up appointment even if pain improves, because wound healing and recurrence prevention still need review. Use padding or change work positions later if repeated pressure caused the problem.

Report fever, worsening redness, warmth, drainage, wound opening, increasing swelling or pain that is not settling. Seek urgent care for severe calf pain or swelling, sudden breathlessness, or chest pain. A new inability to bear weight, marked loss of movement or rapidly enlarging swelling also needs prompt assessment.
