How long does breast ultrasound take to work for breast cyst?

A cyst is a fluid-filled space in the breast. Ultrasound can help a clinician see whether a lump appears fluid-filled, solid, or mixed, and can show its position and shape. The scan does not make a cyst shrink or remove discomfort. Some cysts need observation, while others may be assessed further if they are painful, large, or have an unusual appearance. The imaging report is interpreted alongside your examination and any changes you have noticed.

Before the appointment, note when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and whether there is pain or nipple discharge. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the breast. After imaging, follow the clinician's plan. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage a lump to test it. If the cyst is causing discomfort, ask whether monitoring, review, or drainage is appropriate and how the result will be communicated.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new lump that is growing, a breast that becomes red or hot, persistent focal pain, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a nipple that turns inward unexpectedly. Seek urgent help if you develop fever, severe pain, or rapidly spreading redness. Most breast lumps are not cancer, but a new or changing finding still deserves a clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Ask: Does this look like a simple fluid-filled cyst? Could it explain my symptoms? Do I need follow-up imaging or examination? What changes should make me return sooner? If drainage is considered, what will happen during it and when should discomfort improve? Ask how you will receive the report and who will explain any recommendation.
