How long does a breast MRI take to work for breast cancer?

Breast MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images. It can help show the extent of a known breast cancer, examine a change that other imaging has not explained, or support planning before treatment. Contrast is often given through a vein to highlight tissue behaviour.

A radiologist reviews the images alongside your symptoms, examination, biopsy results, and earlier scans. MRI can identify an area that needs targeted ultrasound, another scan, or biopsy, but an image alone does not establish the cell type. The test does not shrink or remove a tumour.

Tell the team about pregnancy, kidney disease, metal in your body, implanted devices, and any prior contrast reaction. Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink, and medicines. During the scan, lying still matters because movement can blur images. Ask when the report will be discussed and whether your existing biopsy or treatment schedule changes the timing.

Report breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, or severe dizziness during or after contrast as an emergency. Contact the imaging service for a reaction that persists or any unexpected problem after the scan. New severe breast pain, fever, or rapid swelling should be assessed by your clinical team rather than waiting for an MRI report.

Ask what the MRI is intended to answer, whether contrast will be used, when the report should arrive, and what follow-up may be needed. Ask how the result could affect biopsy, surgery, radiotherapy, or other treatment planning.
