How long does a breast MRI take to work for a BRCA gene mutation?

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed breast images. For someone with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, it may be part of a planned high-risk screening programme or an assessment of a specific finding. It does not repair or remove the gene mutation, and it cannot by itself confirm every diagnosis.

Contrast may be injected through a vein because it can make some areas easier to see. The radiologist compares the images with your history and any mammogram, ultrasound, or earlier MRI. A finding may be described as needing more imaging or tissue sampling rather than being labelled immediately.

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, kidney problems, previous reactions to contrast, implanted devices, metal fragments, and anxiety in enclosed spaces. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Wear clothing without metal and remove jewellery. Arrange a clear plan for receiving the report and ask whether further imaging or biopsy could follow an unexpected finding.

Tell the staff immediately if you feel unwell during contrast injection or develop breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, or severe dizziness. After the scan, seek urgent help for severe breathing problems or swelling. Contact the service about persistent pain, a marked reaction, or other symptoms that concern you; the scan itself does not cause a BRCA mutation.

Ask why MRI is being recommended, whether contrast is planned, when the report will be available, how it fits with your other screening, and what happens if an area needs closer assessment. Ask how your BRCA result affects the longer-term screening plan.
