How long does brain tumour surgery take to work for glioma?

Surgery can relieve pressure or remove tissue needed for diagnosis, but the visible benefit depends on the glioma’s position, size, growth pattern, and the brain functions near it. Swelling after an operation can temporarily cause tiredness, headaches, weakness, or changes in speech, even when the procedure has achieved its aim. The surgical team may use scans and neurological checks to assess progress. The pathology report then helps define the tumour and guide further care; it is separate from the immediate effect of the operation.

Follow the discharge plan for wound care, medicines, activity, and driving. Keep a simple record of headaches, seizures, strength, balance, speech, and concentration so changes can be described accurately. Attend the planned review and scan appointments, and ask how the pathology findings affect the next treatment decision. Rest is useful, but the right level of walking and rehabilitation should be agreed with the team.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening headache, repeated vomiting, a new seizure, increasing confusion, new weakness, speech difficulty, fever, or redness and fluid from the wound. Seek emergency help for a seizure that does not stop, sudden severe neurological change, or difficulty staying awake. These signs need assessment and should not be judged by how quickly recovery was expected.
