How long does brachytherapy take to work for prostate cancer?

Short answer
Brachytherapy places radiation in or near the prostate during treatment, while response is assessed through PSA, examination, and other planned reviews.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Response review
- PSA checks, examination, and tests when needed
- Treatment focus
- Radiation in or near the prostate
What the timing means
Radiation affects cancer cells over time, so PSA can change gradually and may fluctuate during recovery. Urinary, bowel, or sexual symptoms also do not reliably show whether treatment has worked. The oncology team interprets results alongside examination and imaging when needed.
What to do
Take medicines as directed, drink according to your team’s advice, and attend PSA checks. Report urinary difficulty, burning, bowel changes, blood, or sexual side effects. Follow instructions about activity and any temporary precautions.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or rapidly worsening weakness. Call the team if urinary or bowel symptoms become difficult to manage.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when PSA will be checked, how a temporary PSA rise will be interpreted, what symptoms are expected, and when to discuss additional treatment.
Questions people ask
How soon are urinary symptoms reviewed?
Your team can set the review timing based on your symptoms and treatment plan.
Can an early PSA change prove treatment failed?
No. PSA is interpreted over time with the wider clinical picture.
