How long does brachytherapy take to work for cervical cancer?

Brachytherapy places a radiation source near the cervix so the planned dose reaches the treatment area. Cancer cells can continue to change after radiation has been delivered, and side effects do not reliably show whether treatment has worked. Your team may combine examination, imaging, and other tests with your symptoms when reviewing the result.

Keep every treatment and review appointment, follow preparation instructions, and tell the team about bleeding, discharge, pain, bowel changes, or urinary symptoms. Ask before using tampons, vaginal medicines, or sexual activity during recovery, because the advice depends on your treatment plan. Rest, drink as advised, and use prescribed symptom relief.

Call your treatment team promptly for heavy or increasing bleeding, fever, severe pelvic pain, inability to pass urine, or vomiting that prevents fluids. Seek urgent care for fainting, severe weakness, or bleeding that does not settle. Do not wait for the next appointment if a symptom is rapidly worsening.
