Myeloma can disturb the normal balance of bone repair and breakdown. Bone-strengthening medicines slow breakdown and can help protect areas made fragile by the disease. They do not treat the myeloma cells themselves, so they are used alongside the main myeloma treatment plan. Existing fractures, nerve pressure, or severe pain may require additional treatment. Kidney function and calcium are checked because they influence which medicine is suitable and how it is given.

Attend scheduled blood tests and tell your team about kidney disease, dental symptoms, planned dental procedures, new pain, or changes in movement. Take only supplements approved by your clinicians. Ask whether gentle activity is appropriate for you; a physiotherapist may advise on safe movement when bones are fragile. Keep a record of pain and function so small changes are easier to describe.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe back or neck pain, new weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can indicate spinal cord pressure. Report a suspected fracture, rapidly worsening bone pain, confusion, repeated vomiting, unusual thirst, or reduced urine promptly, as these may reflect a bone or calcium complication.
