How long does bone-strengthening therapy take to work for metastatic breast cancer?

The treatment slows cells that remove bone, which can help reduce further weakening and the chance of bone-related complications. It does not replace treatment aimed at controlling metastatic breast cancer, and it may not remove pain from an existing lesion immediately. Your team may combine it with systemic cancer treatment, pain medicine, radiotherapy, or support from an orthopaedic specialist. Blood tests and imaging help show how your bones are responding.

Tell your oncology team about new pain, changes in walking, dental problems, kidney problems, or medicines and supplements. Keep dental reviews and ask before an extraction or other invasive dental procedure. Attend blood tests so kidney function and calcium can be checked. Record pain location, movement limits, and night-time symptoms; this gives the team useful information even when a scan is not due.

Contact your cancer team urgently for sudden or severe bone pain, a suspected fracture, or new difficulty bearing weight. Emergency help is needed for back pain with leg weakness or numbness, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. Confusion, extreme thirst, repeated vomiting, or very little urine can indicate high calcium or dehydration and also needs prompt assessment.

Ask how your response will be measured, when blood tests are due, whether dental review is needed, which symptoms need same-day advice, and how bone-strengthening therapy will be coordinated with your breast cancer treatment.
