How long does bone-strengthening therapy take to work for high calcium in cancer?

Cancer can increase bone breakdown, releasing calcium into the bloodstream. Bone-strengthening medicine slows this process, while fluids and other treatments may be used to bring calcium down and support the kidneys. The response varies with the calcium level, hydration, kidney function, the cancer causing it, and the treatment plan. A blood result is more useful than symptoms alone, because tiredness or nausea can have several causes.

Follow the hospital team's fluid and medicine instructions, and attend repeat blood tests when requested. Tell the team about vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced urination, or medicines and supplements you take. Do not add calcium or vitamin supplements unless your clinician approves them. Treatment for the underlying cancer is also considered, because controlling that cancer helps reduce the trigger for high calcium.

Seek urgent medical help for increasing drowsiness, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or very little urine. New severe constipation, marked thirst, or a rapid change in alertness should be reported promptly. These symptoms can reflect worsening high calcium or dehydration and should not wait for the next routine appointment.
