How long does a bone marrow biopsy take to work for leukaemia?

The sample is examined for the number and appearance of blood-forming cells. Further laboratory work may identify abnormal cells, changes in chromosomes, or markers that help classify leukaemia. These parts do not always finish together. Your haematology team may discuss an initial finding while waiting for the more detailed report, and the final interpretation combines the results with blood tests and your symptoms.

Keep the appointment arranged to discuss the report, even if you feel well. Ask which findings are already available, which tests remain outstanding, and who will contact you. Follow any wound-care instructions after the biopsy and tell the team about increasing soreness, bleeding, redness, or drainage at the sampling site. Do not interpret a partial result as a treatment decision until your haematology team has explained it.

Contact your clinical team promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, fever, worsening pain, spreading redness, or fluid from the biopsy site. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a sudden deterioration. The timing of the biopsy report does not change the need to act on these symptoms.
