How long does bone grafting take to work for osteomyelitis?

The operation may fill a bone defect, but the graft does not become solid bone immediately. New blood vessels and bone gradually grow through the graft while the surrounding bone heals. Infection control comes first: treatment may include removal of infected or damaged tissue and a course of antibiotics chosen by your team. Pain, swelling, wound appearance and blood tests can change before an X-ray shows mature healing. Weight-bearing may be restricted until the graft and the repaired area are stable.

Follow the weight-bearing, wound-care and antibiotic instructions exactly. Keep follow-up appointments so your surgeon can examine the wound and use imaging to assess the graft. Use mobility aids as taught, avoid smoking, and tell the team about diabetes, poor circulation, steroid treatment or medicines that affect immunity. Do not stop antibiotics because you feel better. Your surgeon can explain when walking, work, exercise and physiotherapy can be increased safely.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound opening, fever, chills, worsening pain or new swelling. Seek urgent help for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly spreading redness. A recurrence of bone infection can develop subtly, so persistent drainage or pain deserves assessment even if the incision looks mostly healed.
