How long does blood transfusion support take to work for anaemia in cancer?

Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. Adding compatible red cells can raise the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity, which may ease tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness or a fast heartbeat as your body responds. A transfusion does not remove the reason your red-cell level fell. Cancer itself, bleeding, inflammation, kidney problems, or treatment can contribute, so the oncology team may repeat blood tests and review the wider plan.

Tell the team about new symptoms, previous transfusion reactions, allergies and any medicines you take. Staff check your identity and blood compatibility, then monitor your temperature, pulse, breathing and blood pressure before and during the infusion. Rest afterwards, drink according to your clinical advice, and record whether breathlessness or energy improves. Ask when your next blood count is due and what result would prompt another review.

Tell the transfusion team immediately if you develop chills, fever, itching, rash, chest or back discomfort, worsening breathlessness, swelling, or feeling faint. After leaving, seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact your cancer team promptly for a fever or dark urine after treatment, even if the earlier transfusion seemed comfortable.

Ask what caused the anaemia, what improvement is expected, how long the benefit may last, and which symptoms should be reported. You can also ask whether bleeding, iron or vitamin deficiency, kidney function, cancer treatment, or another issue needs attention.
