The laboratory looks for evidence of malaria parasites in blood and may identify the type that is present. The result is interpreted with fever, chills, sweating, headache, body aches, vomiting and recent travel or residence in an area where malaria occurs. Parasite levels can change, so further samples may be needed if the first test is negative but clinical concern remains. Malaria can become serious quickly and should not be managed by waiting at home for symptoms to pass.

Tell the clinician exactly where you travelled, when you returned, and whether you used prevention medicine. Follow instructions for urgent testing and remain available for the result. Do not self-treat with leftover medicines. Drink fluids if you can, but seek assessment rather than relying on home care. If you are already being treated, take doses exactly as directed and report vomiting or worsening symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for fever after travel to a malaria area, especially with confusion, extreme drowsiness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, fainting, seizures or yellowing of the skin. Tell emergency staff about travel even if an initial blood test was negative. Do not delay care while waiting for a routine appointment.
