What the test measures

The test measures glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in red blood cells. Results can help identify reduced enzyme activity, which may make red cells more vulnerable to breakdown after particular medicines, infections, or foods. Testing during or soon after an episode of red-cell breakdown can be harder to interpret because younger red cells may have different enzyme activity, so a clinician may recommend repeat testing.

Tell the clinician about recent fever, jaundice, dark urine, anaemia, transfusion, medicines, and supplements. Do not stop an essential medicine unless the prescriber instructs you, but check before starting a new medicine if G6PD deficiency is suspected. Keep a note of when the sample was taken and ask whether the result will be sent to your clinic or directly to you.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, severe weakness, breathlessness, a fast heartbeat, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can accompany significant red-cell breakdown and should not wait for a test report.
