How long does a blood test take to work for Crohn's disease?

Blood testing can look for signs such as anaemia, inflammation, infection, or changes linked with nutrition. These findings can support an assessment of Crohn's disease and show how active inflammation may be, but they do not confirm the condition by themselves. A clinician may combine the results with your symptoms, examination, stool testing, imaging, or endoscopy.

Ask when the laboratory expects to release each result and how you will receive it. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your clinician tells you otherwise, and record changes in bowel frequency, pain, bleeding, appetite, or weight so they can be discussed at follow-up. A normal blood result does not automatically rule out Crohn's disease.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your care team sooner if diarrhoea or bleeding is increasing while you wait for results.
