How long does blood pressure medication take to work for stroke?

After a stroke, the timing and amount of blood pressure reduction depend on the type of stroke, the brain’s condition and other treatments. Lowering pressure too quickly may not be appropriate in every situation. The medicine helps reduce future vascular strain; it does not reverse established brain injury or replace urgent stroke treatment.

Take each dose as prescribed and attend blood pressure reviews. Keep a record if home monitoring is recommended, including the time of the reading and medicine dose. Do not make a sudden change after one reading. Tell the stroke team about dizziness, falls, missed doses, new medicines and difficulty swallowing tablets.

Call emergency services immediately for new facial drooping, arm or leg weakness, speech difficulty, sudden vision change, loss of balance, severe headache or confusion, even if the signs improve. Do not wait for blood pressure medicine to take effect and do not drive yourself to hospital.
