How long does autologous stem cell transplant take to work for Hodgkin lymphoma?

Your own previously collected stem cells are returned after conditioning treatment. Their first job is to repopulate the marrow so it can make red cells, white cells and platelets again. This engraftment phase is separate from the cancer response: the lymphoma may already have been assessed with scans before transplant, and further imaging is planned after recovery. Fatigue, infection risk, appetite changes and low blood counts can continue while the body rebuilds. The transplant team interprets scan findings with symptoms and the treatment history.

Follow the unit’s instructions about medicines, visitors, food safety and activity. Take your temperature as directed and keep a record of fluid intake, bowel changes, mouth soreness and pain. Drink according to your team’s advice, rest between activities and move gently when cleared. Keep follow-up appointments even if energy returns quickly, because blood counts and lymphoma assessments may need different types of review. Ask when blood tests and scans are expected.

Call the transplant unit urgently for fever, chills, unusual bleeding, severe mouth sores, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, new breathlessness, confusion or a rash. A sudden change in a line site, including redness, pain or discharge, also needs prompt review. Use the emergency contact provided by your hospital if symptoms are severe.
