How long does antifungal treatment take to work for nipple thrush?

Burning nipple pain, itching, shiny or flaky skin, and pain during or after breastfeeding may settle gradually rather than all at once. Treatment choice and duration depend on the examination, whether the baby has mouth symptoms, and whether another cause could explain the pain. A small amount of early improvement is reassuring, but symptoms returning quickly can mean that both parent and baby need assessment and treatment.

Use the medicine exactly as prescribed and finish the advised course unless a clinician changes it. Keep nipples clean and dry, change damp breast pads promptly, wash hands before and after feeds or applying treatment, and follow advice about sterilising pump parts and feeding equipment. Do not share creams or use leftover medicine. A clinician can advise whether your baby and close contacts need review.

Arrange medical review if pain is worsening, there is a hot swollen area, fever, pus, a cracked wound that is not healing, or you feel unwell. Seek advice if symptoms have not begun to improve after the expected treatment period, or if they return after treatment. Urgent help is appropriate for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, or difficulty feeding your baby because of pain.
