Antibiotics do not help viral tonsillitis, so a clinician may use the examination and any testing to decide whether they are suitable. Tender neck glands or enlarged tonsils can take longer to settle than fever. Persistent symptoms do not automatically mean a serious problem, but they deserve review when the expected pattern is not followed.

Take the antibiotic at the times prescribed and complete the course. Drink regularly, choose foods that are easy to swallow, and rest. Do not share antibiotics or use old medication from another illness. Avoid smoking and other throat irritants.
