How long does antibiotic treatment take to work for strep throat?

A falling fever, less throat pain, and easier swallowing are reassuring signs. The tonsils may remain red or swollen after you start feeling better. Antibiotics treat the bacterial infection; they do not instantly remove inflammation. If there is no clear improvement after a couple of days, the diagnosis, medicine, dose, or ability to swallow it may need checking.

Take each dose exactly as directed and complete the course, even when your throat feels normal. Rest, drink cool or warm fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Do not share leftover antibiotics or use someone else’s prescription. Wash your hands and avoid sharing cups or utensils while unwell. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening your mouth.
