How recovery may look

Improvement does not mean the infection can be ignored: the prescribed medicine is used to clear the bacteria and lower the risk of complications.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are not beginning to improve after a few days, the fever returns, or the child is drinking very little. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, a stiff neck, signs of dehydration, or a rash that does not fade when pressed and the child seems unwell.
