How long does antibiotic treatment take to work for amoebiasis?

Amoebiasis can cause diarrhoea, cramps, abdominal pain, or blood and mucus in the stool. Improvement depends on the medicine prescribed and whether infection remains in the intestine after the first part of treatment. Feeling better does not always mean every form of treatment is complete. Ongoing diarrhoea can also leave you dehydrated, even when cramps are easing.

Take each dose as directed and complete the prescribed course. Drink frequent fluids; oral rehydration solution may help replace water and salts when diarrhoea is significant. Choose light foods as tolerated and wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food. Avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not take anti-diarrhoeal medicines without checking, especially if stool contains blood or you have fever.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, very little urine, or blood in the stool with worsening illness. Arrange prompt review if diarrhoea is not improving after a few days, returns after treatment, or prevents you from drinking. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with long-term illness can become dehydrated more quickly.

Ask how long your prescribed course should last, whether a follow-up stool test is needed, and which fluids or foods are suitable. Tell the clinician about blood in stool, recent travel, pregnancy, dehydration, or medicines you already use.
