How long do antibiotics take to work for folliculitis?

Folliculitis is inflammation around hair follicles. It can have bacterial or non-bacterial triggers, so an antibiotic may not help every pattern of bumps. Fewer new spots, less tenderness, and reduced redness suggest progress; marks or small bumps may remain after active inflammation settles.

If new lesions continue appearing after two or three days, or the area becomes deeper and more painful, ask for a review. The clinician may need to reconsider the cause, treatment, or whether a culture is useful. Use the medicine for the instructed duration.

Take prescribed doses as directed and wash gently with lukewarm water. Pause shaving, waxing, tight clothing, and friction over the affected area until it calms. Do not pick spots or share razors, towels, or sports equipment. Keep sweaty clothing off the skin and change it after exercise.

Avoid adding antiseptics, steroid creams, or acne products unless a clinician recommends them, because some products can irritate inflamed follicles or mask worsening infection.

Arrange prompt care if bumps spread rapidly, become large or deep, drain extensively, or leave increasing pain. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, red streaks, facial or eye involvement, confusion, faintness, or severe weakness. Recurrent folliculitis, scalp involvement, or symptoms after a new medicine also deserve assessment.
