When the membranes rupture before labour, the care team weighs infection, gestational age, fetal wellbeing and signs of labour. Corticosteroids help prepare the baby's lungs if an early birth becomes necessary; they do not seal the membranes or treat an infection. The expected benefit depends on how much time remains before birth, but treatment can still be considered when delivery may happen soon.

Stay in the care setting recommended by your obstetric team and follow instructions about monitoring, medicines and activity. Report fluid colour or smell, contractions, pelvic pressure, feverishness and changes in fetal movement. Do not wait for the steroid course to finish before reporting a new symptom. Your team may monitor your temperature, pulse, blood tests, fetal heart rate and contractions.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for fever, chills, feeling acutely unwell, worsening abdominal tenderness, foul-smelling fluid, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement. A sudden gush of fluid or ongoing leaking also needs prompt review. These signs can indicate infection or labour and require assessment even if you have recently received steroids.

Ask when each dose is due, how your baby and the fluid will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger immediate contact. Clarify whether antibiotics, observation or delivery planning are part of your individual plan.
