How Long Does an Anomaly Scan Take to Work for Neural Tube Defects?

The sonographer examines fetal structures, the placenta, amniotic fluid and growth using ultrasound images. The view of the brain and spine can help identify signs that may suggest a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida or anencephaly. The scan is a screening and assessment examination, not a treatment. Fetal position, movement, gestational age and image quality can affect what can be seen, and a suspected finding may require a repeat scan or specialist assessment.

Ask when the findings will be explained and whether the clinician could see all the structures clearly. If the view was limited, follow the recommended repeat-scan plan. If a possible abnormality is identified, ask about referral to fetal medicine, additional imaging and genetic counselling. Write down the terms used so you can discuss them accurately at the next appointment.

Contact your maternity team if you have questions about an unexpected scan finding or do not understand the follow-up plan. The scan itself is not usually an emergency, but urgent advice is appropriate for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid loss, fever or reduced fetal movement. Do not interpret an incomplete view as a diagnosis.
