How long does allergy testing take to work for house dust mite allergy?

A skin-prick test is usually read after a short period in the clinic. A blood test may be reported later. A positive result indicates sensitivity to the tested allergen; it does not measure how severe your symptoms will be or show that house dust mites explain every episode of congestion, sneezing or wheezing.

House dust mites live in indoor dust and bedding, so symptoms may continue while exposure remains. Changes such as washing bedding as advised, reducing bedroom dust and using prescribed nasal or asthma treatment may take time to make a noticeable difference. Follow the plan consistently and review it if symptoms persist.

Note where symptoms occur, whether they are worse during sleep or cleaning, and whether anyone else notices visible dust or dampness. Bring your medicines and ask whether antihistamines should be paused before skin testing. Do not make major household changes based on a result before discussing which measures are likely to help.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, faintness, or swelling of the throat or tongue. Book a routine review when nasal blockage, cough, wheezing, sleep disruption or reduced smell continues despite the agreed plan, or when cleaning triggers repeated breathing symptoms.
