How long does allergy medication take to work for insect bites and stings?

Antihistamines reduce the effect of histamine, a chemical involved in itching, redness and raised skin. The timing depends on the medicine, when it was taken, and how strongly your body reacted. A small local reaction may improve as the medicine takes effect, but redness or swelling around a sting can remain for a while. Allergy medicine does not remove a stinger or treat every cause of pain.

Follow the label or your clinician’s directions and do not take extra doses to speed relief. If a bee stinger is visible, remove it gently without squeezing the venom sac. Wash the area, use a wrapped cold pack, and keep the affected limb raised if comfortable. Avoid scratching, and check whether swelling is spreading beyond the nearby skin.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms after a sting or bite. These can signal anaphylaxis and need urgent treatment. Seek prompt medical advice if swelling involves the eye or mouth, the reaction keeps worsening, or the site becomes increasingly hot, painful or draining.

Ask which medicine suits your symptoms, when another dose would be appropriate, and whether it can cause drowsiness. Also ask how to recognise a serious reaction and whether you need an emergency action plan for future stings.
