Adjuvant chemotherapy is given after surgery to treat cancer cells that may be too small to see on scans. Medicines are usually given in cycles, with recovery time between them. The exact schedule depends on the drug combination, breast cancer features, previous treatment, blood counts and how your body responds. There is no single day when its benefit can be measured for everyone. The treatment plan is designed before it starts and may be adjusted if side effects, infection or blood-count changes require a delay or dose change.

Keep your appointments and tell the oncology team about fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, mouth soreness, numbness, pain or changes in eating and drinking. Take anti-sickness medicines exactly as prescribed and ask before starting supplements or over-the-counter products. Rest, gentle activity and practical help with meals or transport can make recovery days easier. Ask when hair changes, menstrual changes, fertility, work and vaccinations should be discussed.

Contact your oncology team urgently for a fever or chills, breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, bleeding or sudden marked weakness. Do not wait for the next cycle if you feel acutely unwell. A low white-cell count can make infection harder to fight, so the team may arrange tests and treatment quickly.
