How long does acne scar laser treatment take to work for atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are indented because the skin has lost or rearranged supporting tissue after inflammation. A resurfacing laser can stimulate a healing response and improve the transition between the scar and nearby skin, but the indentation does not fill instantly. Swelling may briefly make a scar look smoother, while redness or peeling can hide the longer-term change. Ice-pick, boxcar, and rolling scars have different shapes and may not respond in the same way. A clinician may combine approaches when a scar extends deeply or is tethered below the surface.

Use only the cleanser, moisturiser, and protective products approved for the treated area. Leave peeling or crusted skin alone, avoid heat and friction while advised, and protect the face from sunlight to reduce unwanted darkening. Keep acne under control as part of the plan, because new inflammation can create additional scars. Attend review visits before deciding whether further treatment is appropriate.

Ask for prompt assessment if pain increases, redness spreads, fluid becomes cloudy or foul-smelling, blisters develop, or healing seems stalled. Fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or eye involvement needs urgent medical care. Report new or pronounced dark or pale areas so the clinician can advise on treatment and protection.
