How long does acid reflux medication take to work for gastritis?

Medicines that neutralise acid may act quickly but briefly. Other medicines reduce acid production and may need regular use before their full benefit is clear. Gastritis can have causes such as irritation from medicines, alcohol, infection or another stomach problem, and acid reduction does not correct each of these. A partial response does not confirm the cause, and persistent symptoms deserve a review rather than indefinite self-treatment.

Take the medicine exactly as directed on its label or by your clinician, including any instructions about timing with meals. Avoid adding or switching products repeatedly without advice. Tell the clinician about anti-inflammatory painkillers, supplements and other medicines, since some can irritate the stomach or interact with treatment. Smaller meals and avoiding personal triggers may help symptoms while the underlying problem is assessed.

Arrange medical review if symptoms continue, recur when medicine is stopped, or come with loss of appetite, ongoing vomiting, trouble swallowing or unexplained weight loss.
