How long does abscess drainage take to work for paronychia?

Paronychia is inflammation or infection beside the fingernail or toenail. When a pocket of pus is present, releasing it can reduce pressure, yet the nail fold remains inflamed while the tissue repairs itself. The drainage site may be tender and covered. Nail changes, if the nail growth area was affected, can take much longer to grow out than the skin takes to calm. Persistent symptoms may mean there is another pocket, ongoing irritation, or infection extending beyond the nail fold.

Protect the drained area with the dressing recommended by your clinician and keep it clean and dry according to their instructions. Do not bite the nails, cut the cuticles, or use sharp tools to reopen the area. Avoid prolonged soaking, harsh chemicals, and tight footwear when a toe is involved. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and compare the finger or toe with the other side for improving warmth, colour, movement, and pain.

Arrange prompt review if swelling or throbbing continues to increase, pus re-accumulates, redness travels away from the nail, or bending the finger becomes difficult. Urgent assessment is needed for fever, red streaks, severe pain, numbness, or rapidly spreading redness. Earlier review is sensible with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity.
