How long does abscess drainage take to work for a skin cyst?

A skin cyst can become inflamed when its contents collect beneath the skin. Drainage releases trapped material and reduces tension, but the surrounding tissue may remain irritated after the procedure. The opening may continue to release fluid for a short time, and the area can need a dressing. Drainage may calm an acute flare without removing the cyst wall, so the lump can return later. Keep the dressing and nearby skin clean as instructed, wash your hands before touching the area, and avoid squeezing or probing the opening.
