How long does abdominal ultrasound take to work for pancreatitis?

The scan uses sound waves to examine the upper abdomen, including the gallbladder and nearby structures. It can help identify gallstones or changes in the bile ducts, which may help explain pancreatitis. The pancreas can be partly hidden by bowel gas, so ultrasound may not show every detail. Diagnosis and severity assessment also use your symptoms, examination and blood tests; other imaging may be considered when the picture remains unclear.

Follow the service's instructions about fasting or drinking before the scan, because preparation can improve views of the gallbladder and upper abdomen. Wear clothing that allows access to the area and tell the sonographer where the pain is strongest. A radiologist or clinician interprets the images. Continue the treatment plan given to you; the ultrasound itself does not reduce pancreatic inflammation.

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, pain spreading to the back, repeated vomiting, fever, faintness, confusion, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
