How long does abdominal ultrasound take to work for gallstones?

The scan uses sound waves to create images of the gallbladder and bile ducts. It may show stones, gallbladder-wall changes or signs that bile flow is obstructed. A result is interpreted with your pain pattern, examination and sometimes blood tests. Gallstones can be present without symptoms, while a stone causing blockage may produce upper abdominal pain, nausea or jaundice.

Follow the imaging centre's preparation instructions, which may include fasting before the appointment. During the scan, gel is placed on the abdomen and the sonographer may ask you to change position or briefly hold your breath. Ask when the report will be available and whether you need monitoring, medicine or a surgical opinion. Do not self-treat repeated attacks without assessment.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, confusion or marked weakness. These features can accompany infection or blocked bile flow and need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine scan report.

Ask whether stones are present, whether the bile ducts or gallbladder look inflamed, what explains your symptoms, and whether you need further tests or treatment.
