How long does abdominal ultrasound take to work for fatty liver disease?

Sound waves create images of the liver and nearby abdominal organs. The report may describe features that suggest fat, but an ultrasound cannot by itself measure every aspect of liver health or explain why changes are present. Your clinician may interpret the result alongside symptoms, blood tests, medical history and other assessments. Fatty liver can exist without obvious symptoms.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions, which may include avoiding food for a period before the appointment so the liver and gallbladder are easier to assess. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the team about relevant medicines or pregnancy. After the scan, ask when the report will be reviewed and which steps support liver health, such as addressing alcohol intake, nutrition, movement and related conditions.

Contact your clinician if the scan result is unclear or you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, swelling or unusual sleepiness. Seek urgent care for severe pain with fever, confusion, vomiting blood or black stools.
