How long do early labour contractions last?

Early labour may start with mild or moderate tightenings that are irregular. Over time, contractions may last longer, become stronger, and arrive closer together. The early phase can be stop-start, and the experience differs between pregnancies. A contraction timer can show change, but only an assessment can confirm whether the cervix is opening.

When contractions happen before full term, the same symptoms may represent preterm labour. Pelvic pressure, persistent low backache, watery fluid, bleeding, or a new change in discharge are reasons to contact the maternity unit. Treatment decisions depend on pregnancy stage, examination findings, fetal wellbeing, and whether the membranes have ruptured.

Time contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next, and record how long each lasts. Rest, drink fluids, eat light food if permitted, and use breathing or movement that feels comfortable. Follow your birth plan and call your maternity unit for its specific arrival guidance. Do not delay a call because contractions are still manageable if warning signs are present.

Call the maternity unit promptly for regular or intensifying contractions, bleeding, suspected fluid leakage, reduced fetal movement, fever, or severe abdominal or back pain. If you are before full term, seek advice immediately for repeated tightenings or pressure. Emergency help is needed for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, or severe constant pain.

Ask whether you should come in now, how long to time contractions, and what examination will check cervical change. If early labour is suspected before full term, ask whether antenatal steroid injection, cervical cerclage, or other treatments could apply to your situation.
