How long do COVID results take?

A rapid test is designed to give an answer at the testing site, whereas a sample sent to a laboratory needs transport, processing and reporting. A result is a snapshot of the sample and the time it was collected. A negative result may not exclude infection if testing was early, the sample was poor, or symptoms are changing. Follow the instructions from the testing service about repeat testing or confirmation.

Check how the service will contact you and keep your phone or patient portal available. Follow local infection-control advice, limit close contact while unwell, and do not share a positive result only verbally if an official report is required. Rest and drink fluids. If symptoms persist despite a negative result, contact a clinician and describe when they began, the test type and the collection time.

Do not wait for a test report if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or trouble staying awake. Seek prompt advice for worsening symptoms, dehydration, or a high-risk medical condition. Ongoing fatigue, joint pain, changes in smell or taste, difficulty concentrating or low mood also deserve review when they interfere with daily life.
