How long does COVID stay in your body?

How the structures involved in Long COVID differ from normal

Short answer

COVID-19 is usually cleared as the acute infection settles, but symptoms such as fatigue or altered smell can continue after the virus is no longer actively multiplying.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Active infection versus recovery

The body's immune system responds to the infection and gradually removes the virus. A lingering cough, tiredness, reduced concentration, joint pain, or changes in taste and smell does not by itself prove that active virus remains. Recovery is not identical for everyone, and symptoms can fluctuate with activity, sleep and other illness. Persistent or returning symptoms may need assessment for Long COVID or another explanation rather than being assumed to represent ongoing infection.

Supporting recovery

Pace daily activities and increase effort gradually instead of pushing through a marked symptom flare. Sleep regularly, eat what you can tolerate, drink enough to keep urine pale, and keep a brief record of symptoms and triggers. Reduce close contact when acutely unwell and follow current public-health advice. If fatigue, low mood, concentration problems, or changes in smell and taste interfere with work or daily life, arrange a clinical review.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or blue or grey lips. Seek prompt advice for worsening symptoms, dehydration, a fever that returns, or a new symptom after initial improvement. Medical review is also appropriate when symptoms persist and prevent normal activities, because support and targeted checks may help.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit expected recovery, whether testing would add useful information, and how to pace activity safely. Share when the infection began, which symptoms remain, what makes them worse, and how they affect sleep, work and exercise.

Questions people ask

Can COVID symptoms continue after the infection has cleared?

Yes. Fatigue, cough, concentration difficulty, joint pain, and altered taste or smell can outlast the acute infection.

Does a positive test prove I am infectious?

A positive result may persist after infectiousness has fallen, so it cannot by itself show exactly how contagious you are. Follow current public-health advice.
