How long can wrist sprains last?

How the structures involved in Wrist Sprain differ from normal

Short answer

A mild wrist sprain may settle over several weeks, while a more significant ligament injury can take longer; ongoing pain, weakness, or limited movement deserves reassessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why recovery time varies

A sprain stretches or tears one or more wrist ligaments. Recovery depends on the severity of the injury, which ligament is involved, whether a small fracture or tendon problem is also present, and how much gripping or lifting the hand must do. Pain, swelling, tenderness, bruising, stiffness, and reduced grip can occur. Improvement should be gradual, but a wrist that remains very painful or weak may need examination because a fracture or more substantial ligament injury can resemble a simple sprain.

Helping the wrist recover

During the early phase, protect the wrist from painful loading and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if it helps. Keep the fingers moving and follow advice about a splint, while avoiding tight wrapping or exercises that increase pain. As symptoms settle, gentle wrist movement and progressive grip use can restore function. Physiotherapy may help when stiffness, weakness, or difficulty returning to work or sport remains. Build back gradually rather than testing the wrist with heavy lifting in one session.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment after a fall or impact if pain is severe, swelling is marked, grip is weak, or movement remains limited. Seek urgent care for numbness, a pale or cold hand, obvious deformity, uncontrolled pain, or inability to move the fingers. Reassessment is also sensible when symptoms are not steadily improving or return as activity increases.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the injury needs imaging, how long to use a splint, which movements are safe, and when work, driving, sport, or lifting can resume. Mention your hand dominance and the tasks that remain difficult.

Questions people ask

Can a wrist sprain still hurt after several weeks?

Yes, a more significant sprain or demanding hand use can prolong symptoms, but persistent or worsening pain should be checked to exclude another injury.

Should I wear a splint all the time?

Use a splint only as directed. Extended immobilisation can increase stiffness, so the plan should include safe finger and wrist movement when appropriate.
