How long are people sick with COVID?

Short answer
Many people feel substantially better within days to a few weeks, although some COVID-19 symptoms can continue longer.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Symptoms often ease over days to a few weeks.
- Possible longer symptoms
- Cough, fatigue, smell or taste changes and joint pain may persist.
Why recovery time varies
The course depends on the severity of the infection, your general health and the symptoms involved. Fever and sore throat may settle before energy returns. Cough, fatigue, joint pain, or changes in smell and taste may linger after the main illness has eased. A fluctuating recovery does not necessarily mean a new infection.
If symptoms continue or new problems appear after the initial infection, discuss the pattern with a clinician. Ongoing symptoms can be assessed as possible Long COVID, while other causes may need consideration.
Supporting recovery
Rest when your body asks for it, drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale, and return to normal activity gradually. Short, gentle activity followed by rest is often easier than trying to complete a full routine immediately. Keep a simple record of fever, breathing, sleep and energy so you can describe changes accurately.
Stay home while you feel acutely unwell and follow current local advice about reducing spread. Do not push through marked fatigue. For symptoms such as Fatigue, Loss of Smell or Loss of Taste, targeted advice can help you judge whether recovery is progressing.
When to seek medical help
Seek urgent care for severe difficulty breathing, chest pressure, new confusion, unusual difficulty staying awake, or lips or skin that look blue or grey. Get prompt medical advice if fever persists, breathing becomes harder, you cannot keep fluids down, or your condition worsens after initial improvement.
Arrange a routine review when symptoms are not gradually improving, interfere with work or daily tasks, or continue after the acute infection. Mention any persistent concentration problems, low mood, joint pain or fatigue.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could another condition explain my ongoing symptoms? Which activities should I restart first? Do my medicines or health conditions change my risk? What signs should prompt urgent help? Bring your symptom record and the date your illness began.
