How long after false labour is real labour?

False labour, often called Braxton Hicks contractions, tends to be uneven. The tightening may stop after rest, hydration, a warm shower, or a change in activity. Real labour contractions generally keep returning, develop a clearer rhythm, become more intense, and last longer as the cervix changes. The cervix cannot be assessed accurately from how a contraction feels alone.

A period of false labour does not provide a countdown to birth. Before full term, repeated tightening can sometimes be part of preterm labour, particularly with pelvic pressure, low backache, watery discharge, bleeding, or fluid loss. The maternity team may need to examine you even when discomfort is mild.

Write down the start and end of each contraction and the interval between starts. Rest, drink fluids, and notice whether the pattern settles. Keep your hospital bag, transport plan, and phone charged if your due period is approaching. Use only pain medicines or comfort measures that your maternity team has approved for you.

Call urgently for bleeding, fluid leakage, a noticeable reduction in fetal movement, severe pain, fever, or contractions that become regular and harder to manage. If you are before full term, do not wait for a stronger pattern before seeking advice. Emergency services are appropriate for heavy bleeding, collapse, or severe breathing problems.

Ask how your unit defines a regular contraction pattern, when to come in, how to monitor movement, and which symptoms require immediate assessment at your stage of pregnancy.
