How is vulval skin changes treated?

A change may appear as a pale or dark patch, thickening, a raised area, a sore, a wart, or a difference in texture. Irritation from products or rubbing can inflame the skin. Lichen sclerosus can cause pale, fragile, itchy skin, while genital warts create raised growths. A persistent sore, lump, ulcer, or changing patch needs assessment because vulval cancer can sometimes present with a visible skin change.

Stop scented soap, wipes, sprays, and antiseptic products on the vulva. Wash gently with lukewarm water or a recommended emollient, pat dry, and choose loose cotton underwear. Do not scratch, pick, or use wart treatments or steroid creams without advice. A clinician may prescribe a topical steroid for an inflammatory condition, treat an infection, or recommend a small biopsy when the appearance requires closer checking.

Arrange a medical review for any new or unexplained change, especially if it persists, spreads, bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, or causes ongoing itch. Seek prompt care for a rapidly enlarging lump, severe swelling, or difficulty passing urine. Take note of when the change began and whether a new product, medicine, or sexual contact preceded it.
