How is varicose veins treated?

A clinician examines the veins, checks circulation and asks about aching, heaviness, swelling or skin irritation. Staying active, avoiding long periods of standing or sitting, and raising the legs can ease pressure. Compression may help some people, but it should be recommended after circulation has been assessed.

If symptoms persist, treatment can close or remove the affected vein. Sclerotherapy uses an injected solution to seal selected veins. Other procedures may be considered after an assessment, especially when ulcers, inflammation or troublesome swelling are present.
