How Is Vaginal Bulge Treated?

A bulge may reflect pelvic organ prolapse. A cystocele involves the front wall and bladder, a rectocele involves the back wall and bowel, and uterine prolapse involves the uterus moving downward. Examination helps identify the compartment involved and checks for bladder, bowel, bleeding or skin problems.

Mild symptoms may be managed with observation, constipation prevention and reducing activities that worsen pressure. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can improve muscle coordination and support. A vaginal pessary is a removable device fitted inside the vagina to support the tissues; it needs appropriate fitting and follow-up.

Book an assessment if the bulge is new, becoming more noticeable, or affecting walking, sex, urination or bowel movements. Note when pressure is worse and whether the bulge changes after standing or straining. Surgery may be discussed when symptoms remain troublesome despite conservative care, or when the prolapse is advanced. The procedure depends on the organs involved and future pregnancy plans.

Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever with pelvic symptoms, or tissue that becomes very swollen, dark or ulcerated. Arrange prompt review for a bulge that appears suddenly, causes repeated urinary infections, or interferes with bowel emptying.
